The 10 Goldback denomination honors Virtus, or “Valor,” symbolizing courage in the face of hardship and moral strength in times of trial.
About the Buffalo Soldiers
The 10th Cavalry Regiment, established in 1866, was one of the first peacetime all-African American units in the U.S. Army. These soldiers — later known as the Buffalo Soldiers — served with distinction across the western frontier, defending settlers, building roads, and mapping territories despite facing discrimination and hardship.
Their discipline, professionalism, and valor became legendary, particularly in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, where Fort Huachuca became both their base and their legacy. The Buffalo Soldiers’ contributions continue to symbolize perseverance, courage, and the enduring pursuit of equality.
