Originally authorized under the Mint Act of 1792, the $10 Gold Eagle was the largest circulating gold coin of its time. The earliest examples from 1838 and early 1839 feature a Liberty bust placed between the 12th and 13th stars—an early design nuance by Christian Gobrecht. He later refined the bust and repositioned it over the date, a design that endured through the final year of the Coronet series in 1907.
These Liberty Head Eagles were produced across several historic U.S. mints, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Due to their age, mint origin, and condition, some issues command strong premiums over spot price—particularly among collectors seeking scarce or low-mintage dates.
