About this product
The Liberty Head Double Eagle was designed by James B. Longacre, the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver, and was first issued in 1850 following the California Gold Rush — a period that reshaped America’s economy and fueled demand for large-denomination gold coins.
Each coin was struck from 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, with a nominal face value of $20. However, the Liberty Head Double Eagle represented far more than its denomination — it was a symbol of America’s westward expansion, prosperity, and industrial might.
- Gold Content: 0.9675 troy oz of .900 fine gold
- Condition: Graded MS 63 by NGC
- Mint: U.S. Mint
- Obverse: Features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, her hair elegantly tied, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.
- Reverse: Displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” Later issues (post-1866) include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle.
- Certified MS 63 by NGC: Choice Uncirculated quality with original mint brilliance.
- Historic design: Represents the California Gold Rush and the era of the gold standard.
