About this product

The Winged Liberty Dime Reimagined in Gold, Graded SP 70

The 2016 Mercury Dime gold coin SP 70 is a 1/10 troy ounce, .9999 fine gold coin from the US Mint's West Point facility, graded Specimen 70 by NGC with the Early Releases designation. A 70 grade means no imperfections are visible under 5x magnification. Early Releases indicates NGC received the coin within its early-release window, generally the first 30 days of issue.

A Centennial for Weinman's Winged Liberty

In 2016 the US Mint marked 100 years since the 1916 silver dime by striking Adolph A. Weinman's Winged Liberty design in gold. Liberty wears a winged cap, which led the public to associate her with the Roman god Mercury and gave the coin its popular name. The reverse shows a Roman fasces with an olive branch, symbols of readiness for defense and a desire for peace. The tenth-ounce weight is a nod to the dime's value of one tenth of a dollar.

Pricing a Graded Gold Mercury Dime

A graded tenth-ounce coin is priced from gold spot plus a premium, and for a perfect SP 70 with Early Releases status much of that premium comes from the grade. Bullion Hunters lists dealer prices in one place. Compare it with a standard 1/10 oz gold coin, or browse our gold bullion to see other fractional options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SP 70 ER mean on the 2016 gold Mercury Dime?

SP stands for Specimen, the strike type NGC assigned to this issue, and 70 is the top of the Sheldon scale, with no flaws visible at 5x. ER, or Early Releases, means NGC received the coin within its early-release window.

How are prices for the 2016 Mercury Dime gold coin determined?

The base is the value of a tenth ounce of gold at the current spot price. Dealers add a premium for the centennial design, the SP 70 grade and the ER label, so their published prices are worth checking side by side.
