The Confident Britannia is a symbol of strength, power, and national spirit. 2017 celebrates the 30th anniversary with this stunning renewed Britannia design. This coin is considered a classic and iconic bullion available on the marketplace today. Britannia is known as a female personification of the British Isles and has been a renowned figure in history since the 1st century.
Great Britain’s gold coins were one of the first to be used in multiple corners of the world as the British Empire spread across the planet. The original English gold sovereign was last minted in 1604 and was so named because it featured images of the sovereign leader of the British Empire. Britannia gold coins are British bullion coins issued by the Royal Mint since 1987.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. This design is the latest portrait of Her Majesty and serves as the fifth-generation depiction of the Queen since her ascension to the throne in 1952. It was created in July 2015 by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
The reverse includes Philip Nathan’s depiction of the strong, powerful Britannia. This female figure wears a Corinthian cap on her head, holds a trident in her right hand as a symbol of her control over the seas, and clutches a shield in her left that is emblazoned with the Union Jack to defend the British Isles from invaders.
