Duke Leopold V and the Founding of the Vienna Mint, Struck in 2019 Silver
The 2019 silver Leopold V coin is a 1 oz Austrian Mint issue of .999 fine silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with a face value of 1.50 euro. It is the first of three releases marking the 825th anniversary of the Austrian Mint, whose origins trace back to Duke Leopold V. The mint capped production at 100,000 coins, and the later releases in the set feature Wiener Neustadt and Robin Hood.
A King's Ransom in Silver
The story behind this coin begins in the 1190s. Duke Leopold V of Austria and King Richard the Lionheart of England argued during the capture of Acre, and in the winter of 1192, near Vienna, Leopold seized Richard as he traveled home from the Holy Land. England paid a large ransom in silver for Richard's release, and Leopold used it to build the fortified town of Wiener Neustadt and to found the original mint in Vienna. The reverse portrays Leopold ready for battle, and the obverse shows a mounted warrior from his crusade.
