Half-Ounce Type 2 Gold Eagle With a First Day of Issue Label
The 2021 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Type 2 is a U.S. Mint coin containing half a troy ounce of .9167 fine gold with a $25 face value, graded MS 70 by PCGS and labeled First Day of Issue. Type 2 refers to the redesigned version released in 2021, which introduced a close-up eagle portrait on the reverse. The FDOI designation ties this coin to its official release day.
A New Reverse for the Series' 35th Year
In 2021, the program's 35th anniversary year, the U.S. Mint replaced the Gold Eagle's original reverse. The new artwork is a detailed close-up of a bald eagle's head facing left, and the obverse was refined to sit closer to Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original Liberty, with adjusted stars, torch, sun rays and Capitol. PCGS graded this example MS 70, its top grade, and sealed it in a holder with an FDOI label.

How Dealers Price a Type 2 FDOI Half-Ounce
With graded coins like this one, the premium covers more than the gold. It also reflects the MS 70 grade and the FDOI label, and each dealer weighs those differently when setting its price above spot. Bullion Hunters puts published asking prices and buyback offers side by side. See related american gold eagle coins or look through our 1/2 oz gold coins.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 Gold Eagle?
Type 1 coins carry the family of eagles reverse used from 1986 into 2021. Type 2 coins, introduced in 2021, show a close-up eagle head and a refined version of the Liberty obverse.
Why do prices for a 2021 Type 2 half-ounce FDOI Gold Eagle vary?
The base is the spot value of the half ounce of gold inside, and each dealer adds its own premium for the grade, the FDOI label and quantity. Comparing current published prices shows how far apart those premiums are.
