The Chinese Panda coin series has a rich history, starting with the introduction of the Gold Panda coin in 1982. The Silver Panda coins were introduced the following year in 1983, initially only available in Proof condition. It wasn't until 1989 that Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Panda coins were minted. In 2016, the weight of the Panda coins changed from 1 troy ounce to 30 grams for both gold and silver versions. The 5 troy ounce Panda coins were also reduced to 150 grams. This change coincided with the reclassification of Giant Pandas from "endangered" to "vulnerable" by the IUCN, bringing relief to Panda enthusiasts worldwide. The Chinese Silver Panda coins have been issued in various versions, including uncirculated and proof variations, as well as colored surfaces and special privy marks.
The obverse of the coin features the Temple of Heaven, a complex of religious buildings located in Beijing, China. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties prayed for a good harvest, takes center stage on the obverse.
The reverse design of the 2022 Silver Panda coin showcases two panda cubs playing in the snow. This heartwarming design captures the playful nature of these beloved creatures. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Panda series, a special privy mark is displayed on the bottom left of the coin.
