In response to a growing currency shortage in colonial New South Wales, Governor Philip Gidley King issued the 1800 proclamation declaring several foreign coins, including the Spanish dollar, as official legal tender. This policy laid the groundwork for Australia's first structured currency system. Building on this foundation, Governor Macquarie would later introduce the holey dollar and dump, carving Australia’s first locally modified coinage from imported reales.
This 2025 gold coin is more than bullion—it’s a tribute to the global and colonial forces that shaped the nation’s economy. With limited availability, historical relevance, and stunning gold purity, it’s a must-have for serious collectors and investors alike.
