History of the Proof Silver American Eagle
The American Silver Eagle Program was launched in 1986, following the success of the Gold Eagle series, to provide investors and collectors with a beautiful, government-backed silver coin. Proof Silver Eagles quickly became a collector favorite due to their exceptional finish and limited mintages.
From 1986 to 2021, the reverse featured John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, symbolizing America’s strength and unity. In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced the Type 2 design by Emily Damstra, depicting a bald eagle in flight — marking a new era for the series. Each Proof Silver Eagle is produced at one of the U.S. Mint’s specialized facilities (San Francisco, West Point, or Philadelphia) and represents the pinnacle of modern numismatic artistry.
