Gobrecht's Coronet Liberty, 1838 to 1907

Christian Gobrecht designed the Liberty Head eagle, which the U.S. Mint struck from 1838 to 1907. Liberty faces left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, ringed by 13 stars and the date. The reverse shows an eagle with a shield on its chest above the denomination. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse in 1866, which divides the series into No Motto and With Motto varieties. In 1907 the Indian Head eagle took its place.
