Headdress, Bison and a Mirror Finish

The obverse carries James Earle Fraser's Native American profile, engraved in close detail through the braided hair, feathers and facial features, with LIBERTY, the year and Fraser's F. On the reverse, the American buffalo stands on a mound, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST and the weight, purity and denomination. A proof is struck on specially prepared blanks with polished dies, giving frosted designs against reflective fields. The Gold Buffalo series began in 2006 as the Mint's first .9999 fine gold coin.
