About this product

Kennedy's Half Dollar in Gold for the 50th Anniversary

The 2014 gold Kennedy half dollar is a 3/4 oz proof coin of .9999 fine gold struck by the U.S. Mint at West Point to mark 50 years since the first Kennedy half dollars of 1964. It carries the dual date 1964-2014 and a face value of 50 cents, and it comes in the original Mint box with a Certificate of Authenticity. The outer box may show signs of wear.

From the 1964 Half Dollar to a Gold Proof

The U.S. Mint struck the first Kennedy half dollars in 1964, a few months after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. In 2014 it marked the anniversary with this gold proof, the first time the Kennedy half dollar was struck in gold. The obverse uses Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts' left-facing profile of Kennedy, adapted from his earlier Kennedy medal in the Mint's presidential series. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and 13 arrows, ringed by 50 stars, with the W mint mark below the eagle's right talon.
