About this product
The Griffin of Edward III on Royal Mint Gold, 2017
The 2017 Queen's Beasts Griffin gold coin is a 1 troy ounce coin of .9999 fine gold struck by the Royal Mint in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with a face value of 100 pounds. It is the Griffin issue in the Queen's Beasts series, showing the heraldic griffin associated with Edward III gripping a shield, its wings raised high.
Ten Heraldic Beasts From a Coronation
The Queen's Beasts were ten six-foot plaster statues commissioned by the British Ministry of Works for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, each representing a strand of her royal ancestry. They later stood at Hampton Court Palace. Edward III used the griffin on his private seal, and the creature stood for courage, strength, guardianship, swiftness and keen vision. The shield on this coin shows the Round Tower of Windsor Castle, where Edward III was born, flying the Royal Standard and framed by oak branches beneath a royal crown. Jody Clark designed the series.
