Two Ounces of Gold for the Year of the Ox
The 2021 2 oz Gold Lunar Ox is a Brilliant Uncirculated coin from the Perth Mint containing two troy ounces of .9999 fine gold, sealed in a plastic capsule. It is the second release in the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III, following the 2020 Mouse, and its two-ounce size gives the ox design extra room on the coin face.
The Lunar Program and the 2021 Ox Design
The Perth Mint's lunar program began before 2000, and its second series started in 2008 to line up with the Chinese zodiac cycle. Series III opened with the Mouse in 2020, and the Ox followed in 2021 in gold, silver and platinum. The reverse shows a strong ox halted mid-stride amid bamboo foliage, with OX, 2021 and the Chinese character for ox. A micro-engraved letter adds security, and the obverse carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
