Britannia With Built-In Security: The 2023 Quarter-Ounce Gold Coin
The 2023 1/4 oz gold Britannia is a British Royal Mint coin containing a quarter troy ounce of .9999 fine gold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with a face value of 25 pounds. Recent Britannias carry four anti-counterfeiting features built into the design. The coin described here carries Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, one of the last Britannias to do so before King Charles III's effigy arrived.
Four Features That Deter Counterfeits
The Royal Mint added four security elements to the Britannia design: a wave pattern in the background, smooth lines on Britannia's shield, a small padlock image that changes to a trident as the coin is tilted, and the Latin phrase DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning an ornament and a safeguard, along the inner rim. The reverse shows Britannia holding a trident and a Union Jack shield with BRITANNIA, 2023 and the weight and purity. Individual coins come in plastic flips.
