Three Chiefs and a Bison: The 2009-W Proof Gold Buffalo
The 2009-W proof gold buffalo is a 1 oz U.S. Mint coin of .9999 fine gold, struck with a proof finish and a $50 face value and supplied in its original box with a Certificate of Authenticity. The coin rests in a capsule inside the presentation box. The W mint mark on the obverse, near the date and Fraser's F, shows that it was struck at West Point.
The Faces Behind Fraser's Portrait
James Earle Fraser said the Native American portrait he created for the 1913 nickel combined features from three chiefs who sat for him, Big Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons. The Gold Buffalo adapts that portrait, with LIBERTY at the upper right and the year at lower left. On the reverse stands an American bison commonly linked to Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo. According to a story often told, Fraser had someone distract the animal so he could sketch it in profile.
