The 2017-W Proof Gold Buffalo in Its Presentation Box
The 2017-W proof gold buffalo is a 1 oz U.S. Mint coin of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, struck with a proof finish and the West Point W mint mark. It has a $50 face value and comes ungraded in a presentation box with a Certificate of Authenticity. This 2017 issue continues the series that was first released on June 22, 2006.
A Fraser Design on Proof Planchets
The Gold Buffalo draws on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Fraser's Native American portrait combines features of Big Tree (Seneca), Iron Tail (Lakota) and Two Moons (Cheyenne), shown with braided hair and feathers, alongside the F initial, the W mint mark, LIBERTY and the date. The reverse bison, traditionally identified as Black Diamond, faces left. Proofs are struck more than once on specially prepared planchets, the blank discs that become coins, for mirror-like fields.
