Introduced in 1850 during the economic boom of the California Gold Rush, the Liberty Head Double Eagle was the first U.S. coin to carry a $20 denomination. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, it was created to handle large transactions and bolster America’s role in global commerce. These coins circulated heavily throughout the second half of the 19th century until they were replaced by the Saint-Gaudens design in 1907, making them a prized link to the golden age of U.S. coinage.
